Thumbnails must survive small browse cards

Roblox displays experience artwork in compact cards across the site and app. Your 1920×1080 master still needs to communicate when it is reduced beside competing experiences. Preview the idea small before polishing details.

The composition formula

A reliable starting structure is one large subject with a readable action or emotion, one smaller contextual element, clear separation from the background, and an intentional low-detail zone if title text is necessary.

  • One subject. Two competing focal points split attention and lose both clicks.
  • Use expression when a character carries the hook; use scenery only when the environment itself is the promise.
  • Contrast between subject and background. Outline or rim-light the subject.
  • Leave a clean zone for text — usually the top third.

Text on thumbnails: less is more

At browse size, more than 3–4 words becomes noise. Most top-performing experiences use the game name alone, or no text at all. If you add text, make it thick, outlined, and high-contrast — and render it as a real layer you can edit, not baked into the artwork.

A/B test with real impressions

Roblox thumbnail personalization starts when two or more Home-page thumbnails are active and learns which option drives qualified play-through for different users. Test meaningfully different concepts, not two near-identical color grades.

Keep multiple useful thumbnails active so personalization can continue adapting. Generation makes it easier to explore compositions, but every final image should still accurately represent the experience.
