Start with the 512×512 square master
Roblox recommends a square icon template at 512×512 pixels so the image stays sharp and keeps the right aspect ratio across the site and app. Create the master at that size or larger, but keep the composition square from the beginning instead of cropping a landscape thumbnail at the end.
An icon is not the same job as a thumbnail. The icon identifies the experience wherever Roblox places it, so it should remain recognizable without a sentence of supporting copy.
- Use a square canvas and export at least 512×512 pixels.
- Keep the main subject away from the crop edge so small UI containers do not cut it off.
- Export a clean PNG or other supported image format and inspect the actual file before upload.
Design for the 150px preview
Roblox notes that icons can appear at smaller sizes such as 150×150 pixels. Shrink your icon before you polish it: if the silhouette, face or central prop disappears, simplify the artwork rather than adding more detail.
A single focal subject usually survives reduction better than a group scene. Use a clear outline, a simple background and enough separation between the subject and its surroundings to keep the shape legible.
Make the game promise obvious
The Creator Hub recommends an icon that expresses the experience's theme, tone or genre and uses relevant imagery. Choose a landmark, character, prop or action a player will actually encounter. An ambiguous symbol may look stylish while giving a new player no reason to understand the game.
Match the icon to the rest of the discovery system. Reuse the palette, lighting and character language from your thumbnail so the icon and thumbnail feel like one game instead of two unrelated campaigns.
Use color and contrast as navigation
Color can communicate mood before a player reads the title: saturated warm colors can signal an energetic fantasy game, while muted colors can signal a slower or more atmospheric experience. Pick a dominant background and one high-contrast subject so the icon has a clear visual hierarchy.
Check the icon on both a light and dark browser surface if your audience may encounter different Roblox themes. The subject should not rely on a subtle shadow or tiny text to remain visible.
Upload and final checklist
In Creator Dashboard, open the experience, choose Configure → Places, select the start place, then choose Icon and upload the image. Roblox reviews uploaded icon images before they appear to other users, so treat the dashboard preview as the final source of truth.
- Square, at least 512×512, with the subject still clear at roughly 150×150.
- Theme, tone and genre match the actual experience and its thumbnail.
- One dominant subject, readable silhouette, strong contrast and no unnecessary tiny copy.
- Preview the upload in Creator Dashboard and save only after the crop looks correct.
