Start with the Creator Portal baseline
Epic's thumbnail policy sets the practical upload floor: a rectangular island thumbnail should use a 16:9 ratio, be at least 1920×1080 and stay at or below 5 MB. Export that master first, then inspect a smaller preview because the Discover card will not show every pixel you polished.
The file is a still image of the island, not a generic Fortnite poster. Choose a frame or illustration that makes the actual experience recognizable and gives a player a reason to learn more.
- Keep the final file at 1920×1080 or larger, 16:9, and below the current 5 MB limit.
- Check the crop and the focal subject at phone-sized browse width before uploading.
- Leave title-safe space only when the island name needs to be added as editable text later.
Make one gameplay hook win the card
Discover places the category, island title and thumbnail beside each other. A crowded montage can contain more objects while explaining less, so start with the one action or promise a player should understand in a second: escape the vault, race the storm, defend the base or solve the room.
Use a large silhouette, a clear foreground/background relationship and contrast that survives reduction. Secondary props can establish the setting, but they should support the hook instead of becoming competing subjects.
Represent the island and keep the image original
Epic's guidance emphasizes that the thumbnail should represent the island and be engaging. Use a landmark, mechanic, character or environment that players can actually encounter. If you use a generated draft, compare it with a live capture and correct anything that promises a feature the island does not contain.
Use assets you own or have permission to use. Avoid copied third-party IP, platform controls, XP or AFK-farming claims, coin imagery and other misleading signals. The goal is a distinctive island preview, not a bait-and-switch poster.
Keep words editable and test meaningful variants
If the island name needs to appear, reserve a calm area and add the final wording as a separate editable layer. Keep it short, high-contrast and readable over the smallest crop; do not let decorative text hide the action that sells the island.
When the Creator Portal offers A/B thumbnail testing, compare genuinely different hooks or compositions and read the resulting impressions, clicks and CTR together. Do not treat two tiny color changes as a useful experiment, and keep every variant accurate to the same published island.
A five-minute pre-publish checklist
Before uploading, open the image at 100%, then shrink it until it resembles a Discover tile. Ask whether a new player can name the mode, action and mood without reading a paragraph. Finally verify the file itself in Creator Portal rather than assuming the editor export settings are correct.
- 16:9 and at least 1920×1080; file is no larger than 5 MB.
- The focal action is visible in a small crop and the title remains legible if present.
- The scene matches the live island and contains no copied IP, XP/AFK claims or misleading controls.
- The image is original, general-audience appropriate and uploaded through the Creator Portal media flow.
